Cocobolo Maze Burr (box) I was recently inspired to recreate the Maze Burr again with similar look as the Cocobolo Rune Box. Cocobolo is a rosewood from Mexico and Central America. It has a spicy floral aroma and takes the beautiful rich red color. When dried properly, it is one of the most stable woods, and in this case I selected super stable quatersawn sections of Cocobolo for the intricate maze plates. The 3x3 mazes are cut entirely with square corners. The ebony peg within each maze is also a square cut peg. A few fancy woodworking tricks are needed to produce this effect and it is in itself a puzzle to consider how it can be done in a timely manner. I leave this up to you to ponder... This recreation of the Maze Burr is based on the original which was voted the puzzle of the year in 2006. It differs from the original in that, it is an actual box. When unlocked the interior of the ebony frame is an enclosed container. Furthermore the framework also stores and extra 6 Cocobolo maze plates. When the unlocked it functions as a solid box does, and if you wish, you may unlock the extra maze plates and reprogram the sequence in a number of different ways. The solution can be anywhere from 7 moves to 116 moves!
